NORWOOD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — At an AAA-sponsored summit Friday, Massachusetts Transportation Secretary Stephanie Pollack had encouraging words about the state of transportation in the Commonwealth.
She pointed toward the 65,000 additional MBTA Red Line seats that will be added in 2023.
"The T will be more reliable because it has new tracks and power and signals and cars, but it will not just be more reliable—it will also be more robust, with the ability to carry more people via transit," Pollack said.
Pollack said it can happen without raising the gasoline tax, as some have suggested—at least, not right away.
"One of the concerns that Gov. Baker and I share about the current conversation about gas tax increases is, is it politically feasible to raise gas taxes say, in 2020, and then have them start going up steadily again in 2022 or 2023, when TCI kicks in?" Pollack said.
The secratary said Gov. Baker's $18 billion transportation bond bill takes care of Massachusetts' needs for the forseeable future.
