MBTA Red Line To Be Slow Zone Free Starting Next Week

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The MBTA Red Line will be completely slow zone free for the first time in more than a decade on Monday, Nov. 25, a MBTA spokesperson confirmed to WBZ NewsRadio.

MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng made the announcement during a meeting of an MBTA Board of Directors on Thursday. Eng told the also told the board that wait times on the Red Line will be down by 2.8 minutes in Winter 2025 compared to Winter 2024. Weekday scheduled trips are also set to be up by 53%.

Red Line service is currently suspended between the Harvard and Broadway stops for track work. The closure will extend to JFK/UMass on Sunday, Nov. 24. Free shuttle buses are being offered until the Red Line reopens on Monday.

By next week, the Green Line will be the only train line left with speed restrictions. The T expects the Green Line to be free of those restrictions by Dec. 21.

Meantime, the MBTA will be implementing the first phase of their bus network redesign on Dec. 15.

The T has also released its first official app, called MBTA Go. It is currently only available to Apple iPhone users.
