MBTA Releases Summer Schedule Amid Increased Ridership

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The MBTA is releasing a new summer schedule while ridership levels continue to trend upwards.

The transit agency is increasing the frequency of the Red, Orange, and Blue line trains starting on June 20, 2021 -- along with the Green line trolleys on the C, D and E branches

The shift comes after all Covid-19 restrictions are set to expire in Massachusetts on May 29, 2021 -- however MBTA riders will still be required to wear a mask while on public transportation.

Transit officials said the MBTA carried more riders during the week of May 10 than it has in any week since the Covid-19 pandemic began. One rider, Santia, said that she has seen the increased ridership firsthand during the past several weeks.

"In the afternoons yeah, as soon -- not 2 o'clock, but as soon as like around 3, 4 o'clock hits -- there is nowhere to sit anymore, and people have to stand or some people sit next to each other," she said.

The number of bus routes in operation will also be increasing in June as the MBTA plans to restore several interrupted routes -- including Route 55 from Fenway to Copley Square. Dozens of bus routes will also be running at a greater frequency.
