MBTA Shuts Down Green Line Extension After Electrical Issue With Train

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The MBTA shut down the entire Green Line extension service after an electrical issue forced some riders to walk along the tracks Friday afternoon, the agency said.

T officials said a Green Line train became disabled near Lechmere Station shortly before 3:30 p.m. due to a pantograph failure. No one was injured and no wire came down.

Approximately 80 passengers safely disembarked the train and walked to the nearby station, the MBTA said.

As crews make repairs and work to determine the cause of the pantograph failure, shuttle busses are running between North Station and Union and Medford/Tufts, in both directions. The T also encouraged riders to use the Rt. 80 bus for alternate service between Medford/Tufts and Lechmere.

The extension shutdown came one day after T General Manager Phillip Eng announced about 50% of the Union Square branch and 80% of the Medford branch will need repairs because their tracks are too narrow.

The Green Line extension fully opened less than one year ago.
