BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio 1030) — After its initial plan was rejected, the MBTA submitted its safety plan to the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) on Monday.
The new plan needs federal approval or MBTA workers could be banned from working on the tracks.
The 'T' says work has already begun to make safety improvements that include new safety protocols and overnight work procedures.
Meanwhile, the question was put to Blue Line riders, does improved worker safety mean improved rider safety? The answer overwhelmingly was 'Yes.' "By the workers being more aware of safety, then I feel that would mean it's safer for people to ride," this rider said. Another was even more adamant. "It's got to be safer," he said. "If the workers are feeling safer, then they are going to be more comfortable in what they do, and that pays off for everyone."
With staffing issues also a major concern, the FTA is asking the MBTA to submit weekly updates on hiring.
