BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The MBTA has ordered the removal and repair of corroded insulation panels at stations systemwide, days after one fell and almost struck a rider at the Red Line's Harvard Station.

The panel came down from the ceiling just before 4 p.m. Wednesday on the southbound platform. No one was injured. A second panel was taken down in the aftermath.

Interim MBTA General Manager Jeff Gonneville said Friday that after a preliminary inspection of the station, it was determined that the panel fell due to water corrosion. Gonneville has ordered more panels at Harvard Station and other stations to be taken down where they only have an aesthetic use.

About 10 panels have been removed from Harvard Station for repair so far. Gonneville said a full audit of T station ceilings will take weeks.
