MEDWAY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — 12-year-old Sam Hazell of Medway is dreaming big.
He wants, badly, to make it to the Winter Olympics as a member of the men’s U.S.A. National Luge Team.
Sam’s dream started to take hold two years ago when his Dad Josh signed him up for an open tryout on the luge developmental team.
Sam did not make the team that time around so making it recently was extra special.
He dropped to his knees and cried tears of joy after his family surprised him with the news. “I wanted it so bad, and after not getting it the previous year, that was so hard for me,” he said. “It’s just amazing to get on the team.”
It helps that living just a mile away is Sam’s mentor, Zach DIGregorio, a member of the men’s U-S Luge team. “I could maybe become the second Olympian from Medway,” Sam said.
