Methuen Father Dies Trying To Save Son From Rip Current At Salisbury Beach

SALISBURY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Methuen father, who jumped into the water at Salisbury Beach to save his son from a rip current on Wednesday, has died.

Authorities have identified the man as Gary Simard, 44, of Methuen. Simard was at the beach with his family when one of his children went into the water and couldn't get out.

Simard and two bystanders then got into the water in an attempt to save the boy. The bystanders were able to pull the child out, but the Simard went missing in the water. He was later located by first responders with the Salisbury Police and Fire Departments.

Simard was taken to the hospital where he later died.
