METHUEN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — If you visit your local library, chances are that you would consider yourself literate in books, but what about literate in tech? Nevins Library in Methuen was keen on answering this question, which led to their partnership with the non-profit organization Tech Goes Home, which provides digital literacy training and materials for library staff to teach primarily older students along with individuals and families in the community as well.

WBZ NewsRadio’s James Rojas spoke to Library Director Krista McLeod, who is very happy about this new collaboration.

“Digital literacy is more important than ever before. It is knowing, understanding, being able to use a computer. I mean it’s pretty simple, and so many people take it for granted."

McLeod also added that there is a special incentive for those people, whether students or community members who complete the training.

“If a person completes the 15-hour training, they actually get a free Chromebook or an iPad and they get a year of free internet access at home."

"“We are thrilled to be working with the team at Nevins Library to support individuals and families in the Methuen community,” said Dan Noyes, CEO of Tech Goes Home. “Safe, sustainable access to the digital world is essential for everything from education and employment to healthcare and social connection. And providing that access means addressing all three “legs of the stool” – access to a computer or tablet; reliable, affordable internet; and the skills to use those tools confidently and safely. Working with dedicated partners like the Nevins Library, we’ll provide folks with all three free of charge and help ensure that more people in Methuen -- and across Massachusetts -- can benefit from the resources and opportunities afforded by the digital world.”
