SWAT Search Shuts Down Methuen Street

METHUEN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Police and SWAT teams searched a boarding house for a potentially armed and dangerous suspect in Methuen Tuesday, but said he's still at large.

Methuen Police Chief Joseph Solomon said Broadway was closed from Brown Street to Center Street as they searched the building's 38 units for the man. He warned the public should avoid the area.

Chief Solomon said officers were looking for a breaking-and-entering suspect, who has not yet been named. Police first went to that man's apartment, where they found another man who they arrested on outstanding warrants.

They were then led to the boarding house, which they evacuated and searched unit-by-unit. Authorities told WBZ NewsRadio's Carl Stevens around 1 p.m. that they didn't find the man inside.

Police said they will be releasing the suspect's name shortly.

A neighbor said the area has become increasingly dangerous with a lot of drug activity; there was a homicide at a bar about two blocks from the scene a few weeks ago.
