MILTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Dozens of libraries in Mass. are showcasing books banned in other states this week.

Milton Library is one of 76 libraries in the Commonwealth participating in National Banned Books Week from Oct. 1 to Oct. 7. This year’s theme is “Let Freedom Read.”

Assistant Director of the Milton Library Sara Troug spoke to WBZ’s Shari Small about why her library chose to participate.

“A lot of the books that have been banned around the United States have to do with issues surrounding gender and race,” said Troug. “I think it is so important for kids, not only to see themselves in books but to learn about experiences that might be different from their own.”

Milton Library set up a table filled with banned books and hosted “Let Freedom Read” read-ins, where participants read the banned books in public.

“Whether it’s a person of color, or non-binary, or LGBTQ+, there’s a book out there that’s going to make them feel not alone,” said Milton resident Heidi Graf when grabbing a book for Monday’s read-in. “It’s going to make them feel heard. Why would you take that away from somebody?”
