SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A winner has been crowned in the race for animal mayor of the Somerville Community Path.
Minerva, a long-haired black cat, won the election race over a tough batch of competitors that consisted of fellow cats, dogs, reptiles and other species.
The campaign sign of the winning candidate shows a photo of the cat staring at the camera intensely and is placed upon a solid black background with the word “crime” written in bold white letters above her.
Whether Minerva is trying to stop crime or incite it with her sign is unclear, but it was enough to help her claw her way to the top and win.
Minerva won over incumbent cat candidate Berry who ran on the slogan of “Make cats outside again.”
Berry is inadvertently responsible for the creation of the election after she was originally considered mayor of the path due to the amount of time she spent there.
However, one resident pointed out that it was unfair to name her mayor without a proper election which resulted in the mayoral race taking place this summer.
Residents say that this is a fun way to bring the community together and share their love of their pets with one another.
