DEDHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The judge in the murder trial of Emanuel Lopes has declared a mistrial.

Lopes was accused of killing Weymouth Police Sgt. Michael Chesna and 77-year-old Vera Adams. The jury deliberated for several weeks but did not deliberate on Friday after issues among jurors.

A new hearing in the case will be held on July 21st. Prosecutors sought a life sentence for Lopes while his defense lawyers wanted Lopes to be found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Lopes was charged with allegedly killing Chesna after he was involved in a car crash. Prosecutors said Lopes hit Chesna in the head with a rock and grabbed his service weapon before shooting and killing him. Lopes then allegedly shot and killed Adams, a bystander inside her home.
