BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Online and mobile sports betting officially launched in Massachusetts at 10 a.m. Friday.
Legalized sports gambling went live at the state's three casinos—Plainridge Park Casino, Encore Boston Harbor, and MGM Springfield—in January after the state legislature signed a bill last summer, but now residents can place bets wherever they are with just a few taps on their phone.
Six sportsbooks went live with mobile betting on launch day: Boston-based DraftKings, BetMGM, FanDuel, WynnBet, Barstool Sportsbook, and Caesars Sportsbook.
Residents must be 21 and over to bet.
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has an extensive list of approved sports to wager on: baseball, basketball, football, hockey, athletics, Australian rules football, badminton, biathlon, billiards, bowling, boxing, cricket, cycling, darts, disc, floorball, futsal, golf, handball, field hockey, lacrosse, mixed martial arts, racing, netball, pesapallo, rowing, rugby league, rugby union, sailing, snooker, soccer, softball, swimming, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, and water polo.
Gamblers can also place bets on professional league drafts, big game MVP awards, competitive eating contests, and competitive entertainment events like the Academy Awards.
High school and youth sports betting is not allowed. Wagering on collegiate sports games or athletic events involving one or more teams from the state is also prohibited, unless those teams are involved in a tournament of four teams or more.
