CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A growing trend among Massachusetts college students is choosing a dorm experience that doesn’t include kegs and smoking pot.

Several colleges, including Tufts and Boston College, report a steep increase in the amount of students requesting substance-free housing.

Tufts has reported it typically sees about 40 freshman every school year requesting to live in dormitories that are substance-free. This year it was more than 100 students.

This BC student said that he understands the decision students are making. “I think it’s their right to say they want to be in a drink and smoke-free dorm,” he said.

Another student said it’s the right decision for students who don't want to live in a partying atmosphere. “The decision to live substance-free is definitely helpful if that’s the kind of lifestyle they are trying to take,” she said.
