BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — More than 30 beaches and ponds in Massachusetts are closed due to high bacteria levels as hot weather returns this weekend.
According to the Department of Public Health (DPH), harmful bacteria originates from a variety of sources, including storm water run-offs, sewer pipes, wildlife/pet waste, and etc. The agencies conduct water quality tests to ensure safety of patrons during peak seasons, which last around mid-June through September.
Meanwhile, an air quality alert was issued in many parts of New England due to the wildfire from Canada that brought down smoky conditions Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the hazy skies will "gradually dissipate" by tonight.
