BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for much of Massachusetts and a huge swath of New England as the area stares down turbulent weather on Thursday.
The Service says the worst of the storms are likely to hit between Western Mass. and Worcester. The total watch area covers some 13 million people and will expire at 8:00 PM on Thursday.
The storms could bring fierce winds, and hail up to the size of a ping-pong ball.
The watch was not extended to Southeastern Mass., which is still under a heat advisory for blazing hot temperatures and high humidity on Thursday.
The National Weather Service told WBZ NewsRadio that southwest winds off the Atlantic Ocean often weaken the storms and often cause them to peter out before reaching major population centers.
