Police warned residents not to approach, feed, or take pictures or video of the animals.
"Most bears will leave people alone, should you encounter a bear stand like a tree, make yourself look as large as possible and make as much noise as possible, never run from a wild animal," police said.
Police also asked residents to do the following:
- Remove all outdoor bird feeders
- Secure any chickens or small livestock
- Secure all garbage, pet food, livestock food
- Do not feed pets outside
- Teach children to never run from a bear
- Keep dogs on leashes
"12 years, never been a sighting of something like that," said Steve Bottari, who lives in the area.
Bottari told WBZ NewsRadio his neighbor took a photo of the bear up in a tree. The picture was taken in the backyard of the house where Steve's daughter babysits.
"We have a small little seven-pound dog, so we were like, 'Just keep an eye out,' but the dog is the first one to alert you," Bottari said.
