ESSEX, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Hundreds of bikers took the roads of the North Shore Sunday for the 20th anniversary of Nelly’s Run.
WBZ NewsRadio’s Kendall Buhl looked at how the event has raised money, awareness, and emotion support for fallen bikers and their families.
Many of the bikers also rode in 2000 to support the wife and children of Nelson Selig, Sr., who was killed in a motorcycle accident.
The ride in 2000 led to the creation of the Massachusetts Motorcyclists Survivor’s Fund (MMSF).
“Some people need financial help, other people just need to coordinate through the maze, through the grief,” MMSF President Paul Cote said.
Many of the riders on Sunday had a connection to a bike related tragedy. According to Cote, some who once received support are now on the giving end.
The fund has also worked to raise motorcycle safety awareness.
In 2004, Nelly’s Bill was passed. It’s goal was “to include motorcycle awareness programs in the high school driver education courses in order to reduce accidents, injuries, and fatalities which disproportionately affect the more than 106,000 motorcycles registered in the Commonwealth,” according the MMSF website.
