Quincy, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — An investigation into cybercrimes is underway at an elementary school in Quincy, Mass.
An unidentified employee at Atherton Hough Elementary School is being investigated by Massachusetts State Police (MSP) for allegedly committing cybercrimes. According to a letter from Quincy Public Schools Superintendent Kevin Mulvey to the community, the employee was placed on leave on Oct. 24.
The letter continued to explain that school officials do not believe students or staff “were placed in any danger” and that an MSP sweep of the building found “no unauthorized technological devices.”
While there is no information on the employee’s identity, school officials indicated that it was a new hire who passed their criminal background check. Some Quincy residents are calling for more extensive background checks for future hires.
“Their checks [and] their screenings need to change or something because obviously, people are sliding by,” said one man.
For other residents, the investigation is a reminder to monitor what their children are doing online.
“Keep an eye out for that stuff, especially if you’re in a school. You [have to] always be careful. Keep an eye on your kids,” said another man.
