CANTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts State Police (MSP) announced they have fired the former lead investigator in the Karen Read murder case.

MSP Trooper Michael Proctor was relieved of his duties and suspended without pay in July 2024, as the MSP conducted an internal affairs investigation over his handling of Read’s case. On Wednesday, and in accordance with recommendations from the Trial Board, MSP Colonel Geoffery Noble fired Trooper Proctor.

In a statement announcing the decision, Col. Noble said it is MSP’s duty, as well as his own, to “hold one another accountable.” Col. Noble also offered renewed condolences to the family of Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, whose death has been at the center of Read’s trial.

“My decision to terminate Mr. Proctor follows a thorough, fair, and impartial process. I have weighed the nature of the offenses, their impact on our investigative integrity, and the importance of safeguarding the reputations of our dedicated women and men in the State Police. This decision reflects our unwavering commitment to upholding our values, enhancing public trust and ensuring the highest standards of service and accountability,” said Col. Noble in the statement.

Proctor could appeal the decision with the Civil Service Commission. However, MSP is “confident” that an appeal would ultimately produce the same result.
