SALEM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The MSPCA-Angell is bringing 24 dogs from South Carolina to Massachusetts ahead of Tropical Storm Debby, the organization announced Tuesday.
The emergency transport carrying the dogs left the Charleston Animal Society in North Charleston, South Carolina on Tuesday, just hours before Debby brought torrential rain and flooding to the area.

The dogs are expected to arrive at the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem sometime before noon on Wednesday, the MSPCA said.
According to the organization, the dogs range in age from five-months to three-years-old. Breed mixes include Terriers, Labrador Retrievers, Great Pyrenees, and Belgian Malinois.
"Our capacity for housing dogs was already pretty tight, given the ongoing dog population crisis," said Mike Keiley, MSPCA-Angell's Vice President of Animal Protection. "We’re tapping into our emergency foster network to help house them, but we really need to find permanent loving homes, and fast."
In order to make room for the South Carolina pups, the MSPCA-Angell will hold an emergency, fee-waived adopt-a-thon starting Wednesday, Aug. 7 through Sunday, Aug. 11.
All dogs aged one and older will be available to adopt fee-free during open hours at all of the MSPCA's shelters:
- Boston: Tuesday – Sunday, noon – 3:00 p.m
- Nevins Farm: Tuesday – Sunday, noon – 4:30 p.m.
- Cape Cod: Tuesday – Sunday, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
- Northeast Animal Shelter: Open daily, 11:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
The MSPCA-Angell is also taking in 19 cats from Darlington Human Society in Darlington, South Carolina.
