BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Up to 18 local communities opened voting for municipal preliminary elections on Tuesday.

Eyes are on cities like Somerville, where current Mayor Katjana Ballantyne will go against two city councilors. Brockton has an eight-candidate race looking to replace former Mayor Robert Sullivan.

Other areas such as Medford, Gloucester, and Lawrence will also hold voting for candidates prior to the upcoming municipal election taking place on November 4th. Boston just held it’s preliminary elections last week.

These preliminary elections are held before final municipal elections in order to narrow down candidate selections.

A preliminary election will also be held for New Bedford will be held on October 7th. More information on the election can be found on the SEC website here.
