NAHANT, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Johnson Elementary School in Nahant received an anonymous donation of $80,000.
These funds, according to Nahant School Superintendent Robert Liebow, were donated to go towards the school’s greenhouse construction project.
A greenhouse will allow students to learn how to grow produce and sell what they grew, while also giving some of it back to the community.
“They’d be growing produce not only for the school cafeteria, but also running a farmer’s market,” Liebow said. “Our plan is to have them be able to grow vegetables and other produce and deliver it to the food pantry in Lynn personally.”

The superintendent said that they want to start construction during the school’s spring break in April, with hopes of completing the project by the beginning of next school year.
“The plan is to get it up this spring and have it working with our kids this fall.” Liebow said.
While the $80,000 donation covers a majority of the costs, the school still needs more than $20,000 to fully fund the construction.
Liebow said they will be raising the rest of these money through a brick-engraving fundraiser.
“We’re doing brick fundraiser, which is where you can purchase for $100 an engraved brick,” he said. “And those bricks will form the walkway from the school library out to the greenhouse and will be there forever signifying the people that helped us with this project.”
