NAHANT, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — As reported back in March, an anonymous donation of $80,000 made to the Johnson Elementary School in Nahant helped build a greenhouse at the school.
Money from a 'Buy A Brick' fundraiser was also used in the construction project.
And now, an after-school gardening program is teaching students the value of community and the importance of helping neighbors who may be less fortunate.
Superintendent Rob Liebow came up with the greenhouse idea.
With the fruits of their labor beginning to sprout, Liebow said the students will be donating some of what they grow to a local food bank. "People who may not have enough to eat are going to have a chance to get some fresh produce," he said. "And kids are going to learn at an early age about giving back and taking care of those people who are in need."
One of the students taking part in the greenhouse is a third grader named Christian.
He said what made the project worthwhile to him was the opportunity to help others. "I think it's pretty nice, and it can help people who don't have food every day."
