MEDFORD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Sunday is the most wonderful day of the year for caffeine hounds: National Coffee Day.

Whether homebrewed or bought on the go, hot or iced, black or full of cream and sugar, the holiday celebrates the cups of joe that get us through the day.

WBZ NewsRadio spoke with customers at Demet's Donuts in Medford about how they take their coffee.

"Always iced coffee," said Francisco. "I just like the taste better."

"I think it more depends on where I’m at," Tristan said. "Like at home, I drink coffee, but at work, I drink iced coffee because we have a cold brew machine at work. So I think that’s the determinant. It’s a good benefit."

For others, it's less about the coffee and more about the atmosphere that smaller shops like Demet's provide.

"The small coffee shops like this particular operation here, they’re a thing of the past," one customer told WBZ NewsRadio. "You don’t have that neighborhood camaraderie. In here, you can sit and talk to your neighbors, spend a half hour, twenty minutes, and you leave. It’s a way to communicate and understand what’s going on in your community, but we’re losing all of that."
