READING, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) – Members of the National Guard have been going through training to start driving students to school in different Massachusetts communities.

About 90 members were being trained at Camp Curtis Guild National Guard base in Reading was one of the training facilities for these members.

John McCarthy is the CEO of NRT Transportation, which provided school transport vans for their training.

“These guys, who come out and fight battles and fight storms and save people from floods, have come to a whole new department, which is drive children to school,” McCarthy said.

After getting their 7D bus licenses, the National Guard members will drive children to school in communities experiencing severe bus driver shortages. This comes per direction of Governor Charlie Baker.
