BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — With natural gas prices spiking this week, some Massachusetts residents are considering alternative methods to heat their houses.

Most homes in New England currently use natural gas to heat their homes, making this week's 20% spike in cost into a big hit to a lot of households this season.

Eric from Middleborough uses a woodstove to heat his home, and he said he prefers it over an oil burner.

"Oh, it's been huge, I don't burn any oil," Eric said.

Instead of paying monthly for oil or an increase on his electric bill, he gets one delivery of firewood every year.

He said it costs him, "somewhere between $800 and $1,000. It's a really good deal; you're still saving a lot."

Carl from Taunton said he plans on upgrading his woodstove to a more modern and efficient unit.

"It's the perfect time for it, save a lot of money," Carl said.

This price spike comes amidst frigid weather for Massachusetts.

According to AccuWeather, a winter storm is expected this weekend and will bring temperatures down to below 15 degrees, with wind chill making it feel like below zero degrees.
