CAPE COD, Mass (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Biden Administration awarded nearly $1 billion today to rebuild the two Cape Cod bridges, starting with the Sagamore Bridge.

The Sagamore and Bourne Bridges were built almost 90 years ago, providing access on and off the Cape. They have deteriorated over the years, with the Sagamore being labeled as “obsolete,” and now they are in need of replacement.

The Healey-Driscoll administration says MassDOT and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have received a $993 million grant for the project from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. That brings the total money raised to replace the bridges to $1.72 million, according to a press release from Gov. Maura Healey’s office. A total of around $4.5 billion is needed to restore both bridges, but officials say this funding now covers the cost of construction for the Sagamore.

“This is a game-changing award for Massachusetts,” Gov. Maura Healey said in the press release. “We’ve never been closer to rebuilding the Cape Cod Bridges than we are right now. This funding will be critical for getting shovels in the ground.”

State officials added that updating the bridges is essential to support the economy of the Cape and the surrounding communities and to ensure safe and reliable travel for residents and visitors.

MassDOT and the Army Corps of Engineers will be collaborating on the construction project. The two bridges are currently owned by the U.S Army Corps but MassDOT will be taking over after the restoration.
