NEEDHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Needham residents have become the latest victims of an increasing number of car break-ins in the Commonwealth.

According to Needham Police, there were dozens of reports of vehicles that were broken into over the weekend. Authorities said they found multiple suspects Saturday night, but they terminated the chase once it entered a neighboring town. Similar widespread reports of break-ins were also reported in Lexington, Mass.

With drivers spending an estimated 95 billion hours behind the wheel, cars are fundamental for many. That's why several Needham residents said motor vehicle break-ins can feel like a gross invasion of privacy.

"What they're doing is, they're opening the passenger side door either with a jimmy or something, leaving the passenger door open, not closing it so that they don't wake up the dogs," said one Needham resident. "The question is, why aren't any alarms going off?"

The answer to that question lies in a disappointed "Dad Talk" post from the Needham Police Department on social media. In the post, authorities remind car owners to remove their valuables and lock all the doors, cautioning that perpetrators would return given the number of vehicles they broke into in one night.

"It's pretty scary but honestly I think you just have to be diligent with bringing your keys in and making sure that you are parked in your driveway, rather than the street," said one resident.
