New Bedford Charter School Closed After Threats

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Classes at a New Bedford charter school have been cancelled for the day after officials received a threat.

The Global Learning Charter Public School on Ashley Boulevard sent students home Wednesday morning.

Students in grades five and six were brought to Trembley's Bus Company, where they were picked up.

The school's executive director, Dr. Stephen Furtado, said other schools in the area also received similar threats and are investigating, but that they decided to close to ensure students would be safe.

The exact nature of the threat, which came in via email, was not yet known.

Bedford Police Lt. Nathaniel Rodriguez told WBZ NewsRadio the department is investigating, but said they do not believe the threat to be credible.
