LAWRENCE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) A new transportation option has made its way to Lawrence.

A slate of 10 new e-bikes were installed at the McGovern Transportation Center late last week. The bikes were provided by Metro Mobility through a $1.5 million grant from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center.

“You have Bluebikes in Boston, New York City’s got their version, why shouldn't Lawrence have that?” said Mark from Andover.

Lawrence Mayor Brian DePeña said in a post on Instagram the bikes will “enhance the quality of life for residents.”

“This forward-thinking initiative brings numerous benefits to the City of Lawrence, including: Affordable and accessible transportation, Environmentally sustainable mobility solutions, Improved public health through active commuting, Time-efficient travel options, Enhanced urban connectivity, and more,” DePeña wrote on Instagram.

The e-bikes are also eco-friendly, powered by batteries and pedaling. Residents seemed excited about the new way to get around. \

“I’m looking forward to trying one of those out,” said Kayla from Lawrence.

The bikes go for $12 a day, but residents who qualify income-wise can rent the bikes for only $1 a day. Users can apply for discounts in the Metro Mobility app.

“I know in Boston they’re wicked expensive, so even people with low income here are able to still enjoy getting around,” Kayla said.
