GROTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — State leaders and health officials celebrated on Tuesday the anticipated opening of a much-needed emergency facility in the Nashoba Valley.

The UMass Memorial Medical Center satellite in Groton is set to open in February of next year. The facility includes 16 rooms for 24/7 adult and pediatric emergency care, lab testing, diagnostic imaging and a helipad for emergency transport.

Governor Maura Healey and Congresswoman Lori Trahan toured the nearly completed building.

“People from all over the region are going to be able to come to get emergency care,” Healey said. “I was so impressed, and so impressed that this has been done so quickly.”

The center will serve patients in the absence of Nashoba Valley Medical Center’s closure two years ago, following Steward Health Care’s bankruptcy and hospital closures.

“This community collectively stood up together and said, ‘no way, we’re not going to stand for this, we deserve healthcare,’” Trahan said. “Now look at this building, it is the answer that we were searching for two years ago.”
