BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — World Ocean Day is June 8, but the New England Aquarium celebrated it a week early Saturday.
The aquarium hosted a series of free educational events and exhibits at Central Wharf on Boston Harbor, each designed to highlight the beauty of the ocean and underscore the importance of taking care of it.

"Today our hope is that people young and old from all neighborhoods and all walks of life can come down and learn a little more about our ocean that we all share," said Luz Arregoces, the aquarium's director of community engagement.
Programming included an "ask a scientist" booth with aquarium scientists, a life-size humpback whale, hands-on fish weir building with members of the Massachusett Tribe at Ponkapoag, and a youth art exhibit with work from Bow Seat’s Ocean Awareness Contest.
"We’ve invited partners from the community to come and showcase the great work that they’re doing for our ocean and coastline, and how the community can play a role in conserving it," Arregoses said.
