BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A new exhibit at the Boch Center Wang Theatre honors the life of musician Levon Helm, a member of The Band and later a successful solo artist.
The exhibit, called “This Wheel’s Still On Fire: The Legacy of Levon Helm” opens to the public on Friday at the Folk Americana Roots Hall of Fame.
Helm was the drummer and one of three lead vocalists for The Band until the group parted ways in 1976. He went on to release a number of solo albums and acted in several films. Helm eventually reunited with The Band in the 1980s.
Helm was diagnosed with throat cancer in the later 1990s, dying from the disease in 2012.
Plenty of artifacts will be on display, including personal photos, Helm’s Grammy awards, instruments from different members of The Band and tour memorabilia.
“There’s even an interactive drum set where you can take drum lessons in the style of Levon Helm,” said Casey Soward, president and CEO of the Boch Center.
The exhibit will also feature interviews with friends and fellow musicians including Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Max Weinberg and more.
“We are absolutely thrilled, he was admired from every corner of the music universe,” Soward said. “I think it was just the pureness of his music, and how that came through both in his drumming and in his singing.”
Tickets for the exhibit will be available online.
