SARGENT'S PURCHASE, N.H. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Officials in the New Hampshire's White Mountains are warning of a serious risk for avalanches on Sunday into early Monday morning.

Jeff Fongemie of the Mount Washington Avalanche Center said high winds on Sunday could form massive slabs of snow more than three feet thick, "easily large enough to bury people." The Center has been seeing natural avalanches around the White Mountains throughout the weekend.

Last weekend, a skier and snowboarder were lucky to escape with their lives in Tuckerman Ravine when an avalanche roared down the slopes there. Neither was injured, and the event was captured on video.

The area got about a foot of light, fluffy snow over the weekend. The Center said the risk will be highest Sunday afternoon on east-facing slopes.
