SALEM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Just in time for the New Year, animal adoption officials are looking for new homes for dozens of cats and dogs that arrived from Tennessee, Texas, and Kentucky just days after Christmas.
In total, the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) – Angell Animal Medical Center and Northeast Animal Shelter (NEAS) in Salem have taken in 16 cats and 23 dogs that had been living in overcrowded shelters before their trip to the Commonwealth.
The animals will be put up for adoption once their state-mandated 48-hour quarantine period has passed. Interested adopters can check the NEAS website to be notified for when they're available.
Officials say the dogs are young pups too, ranging from eight weeks old to two years old from breeds like German Shepherds, Dachshunds, Shih Tzus, and Labrador Retrievers. Meantime, the cats are between 13-weeks to 10-years old, and mostly consist of Domestic Shorthairs.

According to the MSPCA, officials are hoping to find the pets new homes for the New Year, if not before then.
It was an eventful 2022 for the MSPCA and NEAS, the two organizations announced they have collectively transported 4,100 cats and dogs from states like Florida, South Carolina, and Kentucky. Officials say the number marks a 10 percent increase since the MSPCA and NEAS declared their affiliation last year.
The MSPCA says that a portion of the new arrivals will be available for adoption through the organization's "Home for the Holidays" campaign, which offers all dogs aged one year and older for a discounted cost of $100 during the month of December— which is at least a $250 reduction.
Officials say the event is thanks to their generous donors who helped cut down the adoption fees for the holidays.
