BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston Mayor Michelle Wu helped cut the ribbon on a new playground for a neighborhood in Hyde Park to enjoy.
A partnership between the city of Boston and the non-profit Trust for Public Land spearheaded the opening of the playground at the James J. Chittick elementary school.
What used to be a paved lot, now hosts blue and yellow swings, a slide, and climbing nets that students had a hand in designing.
At the playground's ribbon-cutting ceremony held Wednesday, Mayor Wu said the project was five years in the making.
"In 2019, Boston asked the fifth graders here at the Chittick to help design the playground that they wanted to see," she said.
The new play yard also features a basketball court and soft-landing pads at the base of the structures.
Trust for Public Land's Program Director Jodi Valenta said every student and resident deserves a place to play outdoors near their homes and schools. "This park represents an opportunity for almost 5,000 people in the surrounding community to have access to the outdoors and nature close to home."
The playground also features a permeable asphalt surface that allows rainwater to soak in and help feed 21 newly planted trees.
