HARTS LOCATION, N.H. (WBZ NewsRadio) —  A New Jersey man was rescued after falling about 60 feet on Shoestring Gully in New Hampshire’s White Mountains Saturday night.

The man, identified as Slavek Zaglewski, 55 of Oakland, N.J., was climbing with his friend Mariusz Markewic and fell on a steep section of trail near the top of the climb, according to New Hampshire Fish & Game.

Zaglewski’s arm and head were injured in the fall. After securing his friend in warm clothing, Mariusz hiked further up the ridge to find cell service and call 911.

Upon arrival, rescue crews managed to raise Zaglewski out of the gully, stabilize his injuries, and treat him for hypothermia before lifting him almost 400 feet with a litter back to level ground. “Several sections of the trail were so steep that rescuers needed to use rope belays to move the litter safely down,” officials said.

Rescuers got Zagelewski to the trailhead shortly after 5 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15. He was taken to Maine Health Memorial Hospital in North Conway, N.H. for further treatment.
