BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — North End restaurant owners have taken a new tact in their efforts to bring outdoor dining back to that neighborhood.
Outdoor dining returns to most parts of the city May 1, but the city says the North End is excluded because of previous problems with trash, traffic and congestion.
Restaurant owners and some members of the public want to bring outdoor dining back saying it's good for business and the community.
New 20' long banners have been hung over North End's Hanover Street with messages on each side to call City Hall and support outdoor dining and oppose the ban.
The messaging drew a mixed bag of responses from people in the North End on Tuesday. "I would like to see it come back," said one. "I think it's great, I'm going to call 3-1-1," said another.
But there were banner detractors like this North End resident. "We don't have to do things like this. I think it's a little bit too much."
And another person responded, "Maybe they're hoping enough voices will bring it back, but I don't know."
