FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The New England Patriots introduced their new quarterback Drake Maye to the media at Gillette Stadium Friday.

The Patriots selected Maye third overall in the NFL Draft the previous night in Detroit. The North Carolina native played three seasons with the North Carolina Tar Heels and won the 2022 ACC Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, and Rookie of the Year awards.

After hopping off the plane from Detroit, Maye stepped onto the turf at Foxborough with Patriots owner Robert Kraft and team president Jonathan Kraft.

"Being here, being in this stadium, I think, you know, it’s one of those things that you never forget the first time walking in," Maye told reporters. "And meeting Mr. Kraft, the first thing I said [was] 'Thanks for trusting in me and believing in me, and hopefully I’m not gonna make you regret it.' So that’s my goal to come here and work hard and win a lot of football games."

Maye also brought along his girlfriend and three older brothers, who were all Division 1 college athletes.

"They played a big part in my role of getting here today, and sports has done so much to our family and put us in this position, and I’m just glad I get to share this moment with them," Maye told reporters.

Speaking further on family, Maye credited his father Mark Maye, who also played quarterback for the Tar Heels and had a brief stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, for teaching him a lot about accountability.

"As a quarterback for this football team, you know, everything falls on me," Maye said. "I gotta get the team going through work ethic, and hopefully be a starter at some point and just be a leader. It starts with me, and that’s kinda my motto and kinda how I approach it. I gotta do my part before I start getting on other people’s part."

Maye joins the Patriots organization following the departures of longtime head coach Bill Belichick and fellow quarterback Mac Jones, who was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars last month.
