BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Governor Maura Healey announced amendments to Massachusetts' air pollution regulations in a press release Thursday.

The new rules will take aim at air pollution in communities with poor air quality, she said.

Starting July 1, 2023, the new amendments will require some industrial buildings to assess environmental, health and socioeconomic factors before receiving operating permits.

Healey said a community's air pollution is often linked to its socioeconomic status.

National Field Director of Clean Water Action Cindy Luppi said the new "Cumulative Impact Assessments" would address environmental injustice in low-income areas and communities of color.

“Cumulative Impact Assessments will vastly improve our ability to protect air quality by making fact-based, historically informed decisions about permitting in vulnerable communities," Luppi said.
