BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A new report shows Massachusetts is a good place for bikers. The Bay State was ranked second in the nation on the League of American Bicyclists’ 2024 list of Bicycle Friendly States.
The only other state to rank higher was Washington, which secured the number one spot.
“We are honored and thrilled with this recognition, which celebrates the extraordinary work of our designers, engineers, planning, and community outreach employees who are making our bicycling infrastructure more robust and our transportation network more inclusive,” said Transportation Secretary and CEO Monica Tibbits-Nutt.
“This recognition merits a huge congratulations for our MassDOT colleagues, and for all our partners and state agencies, who tackle the historical constraints of being a state in the densely settled Northeast with respect to bicycling,” said Peter Sutton, Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator at MassDOT.
MassDOT said the state has spent years working to build infrastructure that accommodates all forms of transportation, particularly through the Complete Streets funding program.
In 2023, MassDOT opened around 20 miles of shared use paths for the first time and completed dozens of roadway projects adding new bike lanes, sidewalks, shared use paths, and crosswalks.
