LYNN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — According to a new safety report, but not the people who actually drive there, the city of Lynn is a very safe place to drive.

Using fatal crash data from the U.S. Department of Transportation-Consumer Affairs, Lynn is sixth in the country when it comes to having the safest drivers.

The report makes that determination by calculating a 'crash score' using the town/ city's number of fatal crashes, number of fatalities caused by bad driving, number of fatalities due to driving under the influence, and frequency of speeding in fatal accidents.

But not everyone buys the report's conclusion that Lynn drivers are among the nation's safest.

In fact, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s most recent Top Crash Locations Report lists Lynn as having eight of the 200 intersections with the most crashes in the state.

And most if not all of the motorists we spoke to who drive through Lynn were shocked to hear about the report naming Lynn drivers among the country's safest. "It is most definitely .... not," one driver said. She observed driving in Lynn was like being in a boxing match. "You have to spend three-quarters of your time defending yourself against other weird drives."

According to the report, where are the nation's worst drivers? That would be Memphis in the top spot, and Baton Rouge at number 2. The safest drivers according to the study are in Green Bay.
