NEEDHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — While it’s still far from on-time, two astronauts stuck in space may be heading home ahead of schedule.
Needham’s Sunita “Suni” Williams and fellow NASA astronaut Butch Wilmore have been stuck at the International Space Station (ISS) for over eight months. Following issues with its Boeing Starliner capsule in June, NASA announced they would switch to a SpaceX capsule to ultimately bring them home.
On Tuesday, the space agencies announced they would be switching capsules once again to try to have the astronauts home by mid-March. The original plan was to bring them back in late March or early April, but they switched to an older capsule as SpaceX continues improvements on its own.
The older capsule had been tapped for a private flight from Axiom Space, but has been delayed to help get Williams and Wilmore home. The capsule is set for launch on March 12 and will have four astronauts on board, two of which are from NASA.
