BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A new study finds social services, food preparations, and the arts/entertainment are one of the most stressful industries, leading to more anxiety and depression among workers.
“I’m not surprised at all, especially the way people are,” one Bostonian told WBZ NewsRadio.
The study asked more than 500,000 workers across 37 states about their mental health in a self-reported survey.
It concluded that those working in Accommodation and Food Services and Health Care and Social Assistance had the highest chance of experiencing 'lifetime diagnosed depression,' followed by those in the Arts, Entertainment and Recreation industry.
“If you haven’t worked one of those jobs, then maybe [you] overlook how challenging it can be and how difficult [it is] day in [and] day out,” another Bostonian said. “There’s a lot of rude people that could come in and out. I imagine it’s difficult.”
While the more research is needed to find treatments, some Bostonians have some words of advice for those entering the workforce.
“Find something you’re passionate about and just keep going,” one local resident said. “Find the passion in it and just keep working at it.”
“You can be kind, and you can be respectful and hard working in every industry,” another resident said. “From what I’ve seen people who embody those things typically do well.”
