BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) A new AAA survey finds a significant drop in interest when it comes to buying electric vehicles.

Just 16% of U.S. adults surveyed said they were likely or very likely to buy a fully electric vehicle as their next car, which is the lowest level of interest since 2019.

Meanwhile, 62% of those surveyed said they were unlikely or very unlikely to buy an EV, a higher percentage than previous years.

So what’s behind the EV resistance? The survey found high battery repair costs and high purchase prices to be the strongest barriers for going fully electric.

The majority of survey respondents also said EVs couldn’t handle traveling long distances and that there weren’t enough public charging stations, sharing concerns about running out of power while driving.

Those who said they were likely to buy an EV cited gas savings, environmental concerns and lower maintenance costs.

However, AAA analysis from last year found that EVs had the second-highest total ownership costs due to depreciation.

The survey also found a significant drop in the number of drivers who think most cars will be fully electric in the next 10 years.
