NEWTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A tree advocacy group in Newton wants to recruit neighbors to become tree protectors.
The Tree Protector program is a partnership between Protect Newton Trees and the city's chapter of Mothers Out Front. Protect Newton Trees cofounder Melissa Brown said the goal is to help motivate neighbors to help out trees in the community. She added that over the last 50 years, the city has lost over half of its street trees
"It's particularly grave if you cut down a tree," Brown said. "It impacts the whole neighborhood."
The program lets people create a tree tag for a tree in their neighborhood that includes the species it is, its diameter, and more facts about how it prevents parts of climate change. Brown said the program hopes to do educational outreach to the community.

"Most people don't realize just how much work even one single tree does," Brown said. "You can see how much carbon it pulls from the atmosphere, you can see how much stormwater it diverts from going into basements or the street."
Information about how to join the program can be found here.
