CANTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO), in partnership with Canton’s Veterans’ Service Office, held a veteran outreach program on Saturday, Nov. 15.
NCSO’s ‘House to House for Heroes’ program kicked off with a ceremony at the Edward J. Beatty American Legion Post 24 in Canton, where 87-year-old veteran Fred Gladstone was recognized for his time in the United States Navy.
The rest of the day consisted of volunteers going door-to-door to the houses of former servicepeople to offer packets with information regarding benefits, resources and support available for all veterans. Some of the resources in this packet included information about applying for Veterans Affairs benefits, housing and employment opportunities, and newly expanded state programs.

Sheriff Patrick McDermott was grateful for those who helped make the event a success.
“It is important for each generation to put a face to those who have sacrificed so much for freedoms they may take for granted,” Sheriff McDermott said. “I am grateful for the volunteers who donated their time to recognize their local heroes. I am sure volunteers walked away from this service with a deep sense of pride in our veterans.”
Canton was the sixth place visited as a part of this outreach effort spearheaded by the NCSO since it began in 2024. Other locations that this event was held include Foxborough, Stoughton, Walpole, Norfolk, Weymouth, Braintree and Quincy.
