LYNN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Free childcare services are being offered to students at one college on the North Shore and they hope this pilot program inspires more colleges to follow suit.

The Demakes Family YMCA in Lynn is partnering with North Shore Community College. Their goal is to offer students a chance to continue their education while making sure their kids are under the watchful eye of experts.

The collaboration was the brainchild of Elizabeth Paz, a special programs coordinator for the ESL Department with the college.

"It's not just childcare, the Y has been kind to offer a space for our students to go in and take virtual classes," said Paz. This means students can drop of their child and remain in the same building as their kid.

The pilot program is starting with 50 students. Officials say they hope if it's successful, more colleges will partner with their local YMCA.

The kids in the pilot program will be from one to five years old.
